A Mid-Century Modern Wedding At The Rainbow Room

The Venue: The Rainbow Room

When you have two grooms who are deeply rooted in the art world, the venue needs to have a point of view all its own. For Garth and Peter, the Rainbow Room was an effortless fit, offering all the grandeur of classic New York with its iconic mid-century architecture, sweeping views, and storied sense of place. The room already had so much personality, so rather than competing with it, we wanted the design to feel like a natural extension of both the space and the couple. We leaned into its mid-century roots with a warm palette of oranges, yellows, and earthy browns, bringing in sculptural forms, graphic details, and playful moments to create a celebration that felt sophisticated, personal, and entirely their own.

The Ceremony

For the ceremony, we wanted the design to feel deeply connected to the architecture of the Rainbow Room, using its geometry, materials, and natural light as part of the composition rather than simply decorating around them. The floral installation became an architectural element in its own right, framing the ceremony with abundant greenery and saturated orange blooms while trailing garlands echoed the curves of the structure and softened the room’s precise lines. Clean, tonal chairs created a quiet foundation, allowing the color and texture of the flowers to take focus. The contrast between the Rainbow Room’s mid-century geometry and the organic, almost wild quality of the installation created a sense of balance—bold and dimensional, yet still allowing the architecture and sweeping city views to remain central to the experience.

The Dinner

As guests moved into dinner, the design became more layered and graphic, translating the same visual language into a more immersive setting. Warm wood tones grounded the room, while yellow and orange garlands stretched overhead in sculptural, undulating lines, creating rhythm against the geometric windows and reflective surfaces. At the tables, organic arrangements were paired with mossy greens, delicate blooms, candlelight, and sculptural vessels, creating a textural composition that felt collected rather than overly formal. Graphic yellow stationery and custom table numbers introduced another layer of color and shape, while the abundance of glassware added sparkle and dimension. The overall effect was less traditional wedding reception and more art-filled New York dinner party that is warm, tactile, graphic, and designed to feel just as compelling from across the room as it did at the table.

The Florals

Created in collaboration with Flover, the florals were central to the visual identity of the celebration. We approached them more like compositions than traditional arrangements, embracing organic forms, sculptural greens, trailing amaranthus, delicate wildflowers, and expressive blooms. Orange and yellow became defining tones, appearing in everything from the ceremony installation to the smaller arrangements layered throughout dinner. Rather than keeping each design perfectly contained, the flowers were given room to move, trail, and grow beyond their vessels, creating a sense of energy and movement against the Rainbow Room’s structured architecture. The result was floral design that is lush and expressive, with a touch of surrealism.

Other Details

The finishing details brought the visual story together. A vintage-inspired cake introduced a note of nostalgia, while the stationery carried the celebration’s graphic language through the menus, table numbers, and paper goods, creating continuity between the smallest details and the larger room design. Lighting played an equally important role. We considered the natural light pouring through the Rainbow Room throughout the day and how it would shift across the architecture, allowing the changing city and sky to become part of the atmosphere. As evening arrived, the light became warmer and more atmospheric, transforming the room for dinner and dancing. Every element was considered as part of the larger composition, resulting in a celebration that felt cohesive, artful, and unmistakably Garth and Peter.
