Love, as it turns out, can find you anywhere, even on an app full of torsos, abs, and questionable profile photos. For Matty and Evan Maggiacomo, their love story began with a smiley face in a sea of shirtless men, a shared appreciation for big ears, and a first date that involved tuna tartare instead of immediately getting down to business. Then came COVID, long-distance FaceTimes, love letters, birthday roses, and enough Disney music to make Alan Menken proud. What began as a flirtatious digital exchange quickly became something much bigger, and honestly, a little bit magical. Once they made it through the pandemic-era romance, the question became: when do you know it's time to get married? For Evan, the answer came while sitting under the willow trees at his favorite spot in Riverside Park. A peaceful moment, a little existential reflection, and suddenly, oh! This would be a lovely place to marry Maddie. No anxiety, no spiraling, just a warm, genuine feeling. Matty, naturally, took a little longer to get there, Taurus behavior, allegedly, but eventually they both knew.
And when it came time to pop the question, Evan did what any good wedding planner at heart would do: first consider shutting down a Broadway show, get immediately rejected by Broadway, and pivot to a private rooftop proposal at The Met. Because apparently a simple dinner and a ring weren't going to cut it. There were friends, family, flowers, champagne, a guitar-playing friend, and one very busy future groom who almost didn't make it because he had a voiceover audition and questionable pants. Thankfully, the pants were found, the surprise survived, and golden hour delivered exactly the kind of magic this New York City love story deserved. Once the guest list was trimmed from 200-ish to a very intentional 60 guests, Matty and Evan also had to decide where to invest their wedding budget. The answer was fashion, darling. Evan had two wedding-day priorities: flowers and what he was going to wear. Evan found the perfect creative partner in couture designer Timothy Lloyd Pope, who helped bring his vision of a dramatic, Tom Ford-inspired merlot coat to life. The wardrobe kept growing from there, with bespoke tuxedos, timeless tailoring, and a working-girl power suit that became part of their forever wardrobes. Their wedding planning journey was not about spending more for the sake of spending more. It was about intentional details, personal style, creative collaboration, and choosing pieces that felt meaningful to them.
And because Matty and Evan clearly refuse to do anything the expected way, even their wedding ceremony came with its own plot twist. Instead of a traditional officiant script, they asked journalist Amna Nawaz to interview them about their relationship, their love, and what they wanted their friends and family to understand about why they were getting married. Add in a Central Park wedding ceremony at the exact spot where Evan first realized he wanted to marry Matty, a week of not seeing each other before the wedding, and a little mulch-related wedding-day anxiety, and you've got a celebration that was completely, unapologetically theirs. Even Evan's decision to take Matty's last name became its own emotional adventure, complete with tears at the Social Security office and one unsolicited opinion about hyphenating. At the end of the day, that's the real takeaway from their LGBTQ+ wedding and love story: there is no one right way to get married, build a family, or celebrate the people you love. Do it your way, with plenty of heart, a little drama, and ideally, no mulch.
