Anna Molinari Talks Project Runway, Sustainable Fashion, Creativity, and Finding Her Voice From Childhood Dreams To The Runway
At just eight years old, Anna Molinari turned on the TV one afternoon and got completely hooked on a Project Runway marathon. Hours later, she had made up her mind: she was going to be a fashion designer. Fast forward a few years (okay, quite a few!) and Anna found herself stepping onto the very set that had inspired that childhood dream. In this week’s episode of Weddings-ish with Jove, we’re chatting with Anna Molinari, sustainable fashion designer, Project Runway contestant, and winner of the David’s Bridal Challenge, about that full-circle moment, her journey into fashion design, and what it was really like to compete on one of television’s most iconic fashion competition shows. As the winner of the David’s Bridal Challenge, Anna’s connection to the podcast feels especially fitting, and we couldn’t resist bringing her on to talk all things fashion, creativity, and weddings. What makes her story even sweeter is that she brought a little bit of that eight-year-old with her. When Anna designed her Project Runway finale collection, she pulled inspiration from pieces she had created throughout the season, even revisiting ideas and colors from something she made as a kid while playing Project Runway herself. Being on the actual show gave her that same freedom, excitement, and creative challenge she felt back then, only this time, the cameras were really rolling.
That resourcefulness has always been part of Anna’s creative spirit. Growing up with a DIY-loving mom, she learned early to look at what was around her and ask, “What can I make with this?” Old curtains, leftover fabric, thrifted finds, clothes that had seen better days, nothing was off limits. That instinct eventually became a defining part of her work as a sustainable fashion designer, where creativity and conscious design go hand in hand. And it followed her straight onto Project Runway. Throughout the competition, Anna had to work quickly, rethink ideas, and make the most of the materials in front of her. During one challenge, when the materials weren’t exactly what she had envisioned, she had to scrap her original plan, pivot, and figure it out on the fly. That ability to adapt is such a huge part of fashion design, especially when you’re creating under pressure. Anna also opens up about being her own harshest critic and how the competition made her realize just how hard she can be on herself. At the same time, Project Runway taught her to trust her instincts, embrace the pivot, and keep creating even when the design in your head isn’t quite making its way into your hands. It also gave her a completely new perspective on what she is capable of when the pressure is on, something she says she didn’t fully understand before stepping into the workroom.
And that messy middle? Anna knows it well. Her creative process can go from, “Oh my God, I’m so excited, I have this idea!” to, “Oh my God, this looks horrible, I’m going to fail,” before eventually landing at, “Wait, this is incredible.” Honestly, we love the honesty. Project Runway gave Anna a front-row seat to that emotional roller coaster and showed her just how much she could accomplish when she pushed through the doubt. She talks openly about the pressure of designing on a deadline, the emotional vulnerability that came with being filmed, and the confidence she gained by proving to herself that she could do things she never knew she was capable of doing. By the time she reached the finale, Anna had found her voice, found her stride, and created what she considers some of her strongest work to date, a collection that reflects everything she learned throughout the experience. She also walked away with a newfound drive, lasting friendships, and a deeper understanding of her own creative process. And because this is Weddingish, we had to ask the very important question: if Anna were getting married and could have her Project Runway cast mates design her wedding wardrobe, who would she choose? Her picks included a custom suit from Jude for one of her wedding looks and a corseted after-party look by Jeffrey, proving that even her hypothetical wedding wardrobe would be full of personality. While watching yourself back on television, especially through the magic (and occasional mayhem!) of reality TV editing, can be an adjustment, Anna says the good far outweighs the bad. Now, she’s headed into the Project Runway finale, and we’ll be cheering her on all the way. And if an All Stars season comes calling? It sounds like we already know the answer.
