Alix Traegar and Zoya Biglary

Alix & Zoya's Magical Oaxaca Wedding: Queer Love, Persian Traditions, and Finding Your Own Path - There are some couples whose wedding photos stop you in your tracks—and then there are couples whose entire story stays with you long after you've seen them. In this Pride Month episode of Weddings-ish with Jove, I had the absolute joy of sitting down with newlyweds Alex and Zoya: authors, content creators, and the brilliant women behind one of the most talked-about queer weddings on the internet. Before we dove into the breathtaking details of their Oaxaca wedding celebration, we talked about something even bigger: their journeys to coming out later in life, navigating family expectations, finding representation, and creating space for love to grow on its own timeline. What unfolded was an honest, funny, and deeply moving conversation about identity, resilience, LGBTQ+ visibility, and the beautiful ways families—and people—can evolve.

One of the themes that surfaced again and again throughout our conversation was the idea of trust—trusting yourself, trusting the timing, and trusting what happens when you loosen your grip on the outcome. Alex shared the now-famous story of hiking to Los Angeles' Wisdom Tree after an early breakup in their relationship, choosing to let go rather than hold on tighter. By the time she came down the mountain, everything had shifted. Today, the couple lives in a home with a direct view of that same tree, a daily reminder of how far they've come and what can happen when love is given room to breathe. Their story is equal parts grounded and magical, balancing conversations about healing, spirituality, and personal growth with the humor and authenticity that have made them beloved online. It's a powerful reminder that the strongest relationships aren't built on finding someone to complete you, but on two people showing up fully as themselves.

What stayed with me most wasn't just the stunning wedding design, the Persian wedding traditions woven throughout the celebration, the unforgettable Oaxaca setting, the fashion, the food, or the dance floor that somehow blended culture, community, and pure joy into one incredible experience. It was the intention behind it all. Alex and Zoya didn't follow a wedding formula—they created a celebration that reflected who they are, where they come from, and the people who helped them get there. Every detail, from honoring loved ones who had passed to reimagining cultural traditions through a queer lens, felt rooted in love rather than expectation. And maybe that's why their LGBTQ+ wedding resonated with so many people around the world: not because it was perfect, but because it was profoundly authentic. As Alex put it, the magic only worked because it was real—and that's a lesson worth carrying into every wedding, every relationship, and every chapter that follows.
